Gaeil Colmcille got this years Intermediate Hurling Championship off to the worst possible start with an 8 point defeat to an impressive Rathmolyon side. The finish to the game was delayed with an injury to the Rathmolyon Full-Back with 57 minutes on the clock and the game resumed shortly after the Ambulance took the player to hospital.
The Village got the opening two scores of the game and seemed fired up looking to gain revenge for last years Quarter-Final defeat to the same opposition. Two frees from Gaeil Colmcille tied the game up with 8 minutes played, Conor Murray pointing first from over 70 yards out and Fionn Ferguson scoring from a closer position.
Both sides traded the next two scores with Ferguson adding his second score of the match. Rathmolyon hit the next three scores in a row and for the first time there was daylight between the sides.
Despite going down to 14 men, another Ratmoylon point saw them take a 0-07 to 0-03 as the sides went in at the break.
Gaeil Colmcille started the stronger of the two teams in the second half and gained two of the first three scores with Ferguson and Murray scoring once more for the Kells Men.
The following twenty minutes was all about the Rathmolyon men as they hit 2-05 without reply to kill the game off leaving them 2-13 to 0-05 ahead. Cormac Mattimoe got his first score of the game and just before the injury occured to the Rathmolyon player, Murray fired to the back of the net from a close range free.
As the game fizzled out substitute Comor Arkins got Gaeil Colmcille’s second goal of the game just before referee Richard Morris blew for full-time. Next up for Gaeil Colmcille will be a battle to stay in this years Championship when they’ll take on Boardsmill.
