After last their dramatic one point win over Ratoath last week Gaeil Colmcille welcomed St. Colmcille’s to Grangegodden for this fourth round fixture in the 2020 Paddy O’Brien Cup Division 1.
The seasider’s got the perfect start when they found the back of the net after three minutes. Gaeil Colmcille steadied their way into the game thanks to two excellently well hit frees by John Gormley, the first from 50 yards out with the aid of a strong breeze.
St. Colmcille’s added a point to their score on seven minutes but Oisin O’Reilly found the back of the net on 10 minutes to see Kells lead for the first time.
The lead didn’t last long as Colmcille’s went straight down the field from the kickout to score their second goal of the game. Kells full-forward Andrew Gormley added a free in the 18th minute and O’Reilly scored from play in the 23rd minute to see the sides all square once more.
St. Colmcille’s finished the half the stronger when they hit 2-01 to a single Andrew Gormley point meant Kells trailed 1-05 to 4-02 at Half-time.
St. Colmcille’s got the first contribution to the scoreboard in the second half with a well struck 45 on 31 minutes. A goal by Byron Wearen two minutes later brought Kells to within four points of St. Colmcille’s.
A four minute purple patch by St. Colmcille’s and the East Meath side took a firm grip on the game when they hit 1-05 to no reply. Kells broke the away sides momentum when Conall McGovern, O’Reilly and Andrew Gormley all pointed.
Just as Kells thought they were getting back into the game, St. Colmcille’s hit them with a blow as they added another 1-03 without reply.
Credit to Kells they fought to the end and a point by John Gormley and a second goal by O’Reilly left them with 3-09 on the day, enough to win many of games, but it was St. Colmcille’s who struck the last score and an eight goal of the night to ensure there’d be no doubts as to where the two points would be heading.
The lads move on to face Donaghmore/Ashbourne next Tuesday where the winner will take their place in the semi final.
