Gaeil Colmcille made the trip on a glorious summers evening to Kildalkey to face their second team in the second round of the Billy Byrne Cup.
Gaeil Colmcille were forced to play with 13 but their opposition started the game with 15 players. Kildalkey with the extra players got off to a blistering start with their first three shots sailing over the crossbar and in-between the posts.
Fionn Ferguson got Gaeil Colmcille on the board with a Free with four minutes played. That point was soon cancelled out with a Kildalkey point one minute later. In the sixth minute Kells were on level terms when a long free from Ferguson dropped short and a handling error from the keeper resulted with the ball nestling in the back of the net.
Both sides traded scores with Ferguson scoring once again for the Gaeils but the extra men kicked in and Kildalkey began to open up a lead hitting 1-03 to no reply.
Kildalkey came out from the first half water break with 13 player and evened the numbers up on the pitch but it was the scoreboard that tilted in the Kildalkey men favour as they continued to pile the pressure on the Gaeils with three goals before half-time to see them lead by 16 points at the break.
With the Gaeils legs tiring and injuries creeping in on the game Kildalkey asserted themselves on the game. For the Gaeils they relied heavily on the trusty stick of the hard working Fionn Ferguson to keep the scoreboard ticking over and Centre Forward Conor Roche got a fine score in the second half. Kildalkey as expected ran out comfortable winners. A word of note to two new young players playing their first and second games for the club with brothers Conor and Cian Murphy lining out in the full-forward line.
