Gaeil Colmcille picked up an important two points with a four point win over Simonstown in Grangegodden on Tuesday evening with a first half penalty converted by Brian Hanlon proving to be vital in the end.
Gaeil Colmcille opened the game up with the first two scores of the game thanks to points from Aaron Browne and Centre Forward Seanie Curran. Visitors Simonstown registered their first score of the match in the ninth minute but it was soon cancelled out when Fionn Ferguson pointed for Kells to restore their two point lead.
Both sides exchanged frees with Beano pointing for Gaeil Colmcille. James Reilly found himself in an advanced position and made no mistake as he pointed from 25 yards out. With 22 minutes on the clock referee Paddy Clarke awarded Gaeil Colmcille a penalty and Hanlon made no mistake as he rifled the ball to the top corner.
Kells finished the half the stronger and Oisin Reilly pointed in the 25th minute as he side stepped the defence to get some space and he made no mistake with the shot. Ajay Tormey finished the scoring in the first half after Curran caught an excellent ball and laid off to Tormey to slot over to leave Kells eight ahead at the break 1-07 to 0-02.
Simonstown raised their game early in the second half and hit the first two scores of the half to leave six between the sides. Simonstown finding their range after a number of wide’s in the first half. A Hanlon free steadied the Gaeil Colmcille ship but two more points in a row for Simonstown closed the gap to five points.
Two more points for Simonstown was matched by two more points from play by Hanlon that kept Kells five clear with a quarter of the game remaining. Simonstown looked for goals and but for an excellent save by Justin Carry-Lynch to keep out the low shot. As the game opened up both sides found their range and a pair of points from both teams kept five between the teams with just five minutes remaining as Curran and Hanlon tagged on Kells scores.
With the game heading into injury-time Simonstown were handed a lifeline as a high ball across the square fell kindly to the Simonstown forward who made no mistake to find the back of the net. Gaeil Colmcille responded well to the goal and a point from substitute Danny McGovern and a sixth point from Hanlon closed out the game for Kells to ensure they got the two points on offer.
