Gaeil Colmcille and Wolfe Tones met in the Second Round of the League at Grangegodden in what was a dress rehearsal for the opening Round of this year’s Senior Championship.
The early exchanges felt like a game of chess with both sides waiting to pounce on any mistakes from the opposition and it was Wolfe Tones who made the most of the early exchanges, breaking at pace to score the opening point on four minutes.
Twelve minutes would pass for the second score of the game and it was The Tones who would double their lead. A third point was soon followed by a fourth and Wolfe Tones led 0-04 to no score with 18 minutes played. A fifth score to no reply with 22 minutes left Kells with an uphill battle. That uphill battle could have been a lot worse if not for a point blank save from Barry Farrelly.
Beano Hanlon got Gaeil Colmcille’s first score and it wouldn’t come until the 27th minute. Two more late scores from the Tones saw them take a six point lead to the break leading 0-07 to 0-01
Tones got the first score of the second half but a Hanlon free cancelled that score out soon after. Two more points in a row saw Wolfe Tones stretch eight points clear with 43 minutes on the clock played. Second half substitute Evan Sheridan got Kells third point of the game and the score could have been reduced to four points only for the Tones keeper to excellently deny Adam Muldoon.
Just as Kells thought they would get the goal they needed it was a Tones counter attack which saw them get the first green flag and all but kill the game off leading by 10 points. Two late scores from Fionn Ferguson and Liam Barry left 8 between the teams as the final whistle went as Tones ran out comfortable winners.
