If you’re looking for the star of the show in the Gaeil Colmcille versus Walterstown Minor Championship match, look no further than Gaeil Colmcille’s number 14 Oisin Walsh who accounted for 2-10 of Kells 2-13 in a magnificent display of shooting off his right and left foot.
Walsh laid down a marker early on for The Gaeils and inside the opening four minutes with three points, two from advanced marks and the third point from play after shrugging off a couple of Walterstown defenders. Walterstown got their first point in between Walsh’s three scores before the hard working pair of Andrew Gormley and Noah Boshell pointed for The Gaeils to stretch their lead to 0-05 to 0-01 with 16 minutes played.
Walterstown their second score on 16 minutes but the unmarkable Walsh added three more points, one advanced mark and two points from play, the second a half chance of a goal that Walsh blazed over. There was time for two more points before the half ended with both sides adding points, Gaeil Colmcille’s coming courtesy of a brilliant Jack Butler point leaving the visitors 0-09 to 0-03 ahead at the half-time break.
Walterstown struck for the opening point of the half but Walsh cancelled that out in the 33rd minute with a free after he was hauled to the ground. From the next kickout the ball made its way into the hands of Walsh and his low effort got Gaeil Colmcille and the games opening goal of the game to open a 9 point gap between the sides. The Meath All-Blacks hit the next two points for the home side but any hopes of closing the gap further was dashed when Walsh pounced for his second goal of the game.
Both sides shared the next four scores with Walsh adding his third mark of the day and a lovely point off his left. With 10 minutes to go, Walterstown did stage a rally and 1-02 to 0-01, the goal coming from the spot kick left six between the sides as referee Stephen Farrell blew for full-time.
