Gaeil Colmcille welcomed Wolfe Tones to Grangegodden on Saturday evening for the ‘B’ League Division 1 fixture.
In an opening tense 10 minutes, neither team could be separated with both sides on one point each, Stephen Reddy pointing for Gaeil Colmcille. On 13 minutes Eoin Doogan played an inch perfect pass into Danny McGovern who took the ball around the keeper to see Kells take the lead.
Points from Niall Williams and Reddy saw the Gaeils move 5 points clear before The Tones rattled off 3 points in a row. Kells closed the half out well with Brian Byrne nailing a 45 just ahead of a point from midfielder Sean King to see Kells lead 1-05 to 0-04 at half-time.
Both sides shared a couple of points early in the second half with McGovern popping over a lovely score from the throw up. In the 36th minute Doogan won possession off a Tones kick-out and played a handpass to Shane Bennett who finished for the second goal of the game.
Kells would have to wait 16 minutes for their next score when Cormac Mattimoe got on the end of a pass from Doogan to see the Gaeils push 8 clear with 8 minutes to go.
As the game faded away the Kells players still looked hungry and Mattimoe grabbed his second goal of the game followed by a Daniel Farrelly goal in the 62nd minute, Farrelly following a high ball into the square and bravely rose higher than the Tones keeper to fist to the net to ensure the Gaeil Colmcille win.
