A League 1A: Dunshaughlin 1-12 Gaeil Colmcille 2-11

After two defeats in quick succession to Summerhill and Wolfe Tones, Gaeil Colmcille picked up a massive win away to Dunshaughlin on Friday evening.

Another sluggish start from The Gaeils saw them a goal behind with three minutes played as the home side found the back of the net. Beano Hanlon replied with a free from 30 yards before Dunshaughlin restored their three point lead with their first point on 5 minutes.

Hanlon tagged on another free and he found the back of the net in the 10th minute thanks to a well worked move from a free kick, Fionn Ferguson showed well and his lay off to the onrushing Seamus Mattimoe quickly laid off to Hanlon who made no mistake with the inside of his left foot to give Kells the lead.

Dunshaughlin responded with two points in a row, a free in the 11th minute and one from play in the 14th minute saw them lead 1-03 to 1-02 at the quarter mark. As the game ebbed and flowed The Gaeils took the lead once again, Mattimoe fought through the Dunshaughlin defence to level things up and Ferguson pointed from an Advanced Mark to put Kells ahead.

Kells got their second goal of the game in the 24th minute and it was every bit as good as their first goal. Aaron Browne got the move going and it was a strong run by Barry Tormay who played through Full-Back Adam Muldoon, Muldoon made no mistake to rifle the back of the net. Beano finished off the first half scoring with a free to see Kells lead 2-05 to 1-03 at the break.

A Hanlon free started the second half to push Gaeil Colmcille six points clear but two points in a row from Dunshaughlin narrowed the gap to four. Substitute Danny Muldoon fist pointed in the 39th and it looked like Kells were in total control. Dunshaughlin showed great resilience and hit six unanswered points to take a two point lead in an amazing turnaround.

With seven minutes remaining Kells faced an uphill task to rescue something from the game but Fionn Ferguson gave some hope with a superb point from play. Hanlon levelled things up when he smartly called for an advanced mark and he made no mistake from the resulting kick. With the sides level it was Kells who called on their goalkeeper Barry Farrelly two kick two pointed frees to seal the 2-11 to 1-12 victory and send the two points back up the M3. Dunshaughlin did have a chance to steal the victory but Farrelly was equally as good the other end with a brilliant save to ensure the victory for Gaeil Colmcille.
