There was no letting up with the weather despite the A League fixtures reaching the latter stages of April and Summerhill travelled to Kells to face top of the table Gaeil Colmcille in Grangegodden.
The visitors couldn’t have asked for a better start as within the opening 90 seconds the ball ended up in the back of Farrellys net to give Summerhill the perfect start. Two points in a row quickly followed and without the Gaeils settling into the game they found themselves five points down with just five minutes on the clock.
The Gaeils needed something to spark them into life and got that in the 7th minute when Beano Hanlon’s superb effort nestled in the top corner of The Hill’s goal. If that settled the Gaeils, more problems was to follow as a moment of panic within the Kells 21 saw Summerhill snatch and grab their second goal of the game.
Three further points for Summerhill saw them lead by 8 points with 18 minutes played leaving Kells a difficult task. The Gaeils steadied themselves and ticked away at the scoreboard with two more points from Beano followed by a Farrelly free reduced the gap to five points. Both sides traded the last two scores with Hanlon adding another score for Kells as they trailed 1-04 to 2-06 at the break.
A wonderful trademark Liam Ferguson outside of the right boot point kick started Kells second half but Ferguson’s score was cancelled out soon after with a point from play and a 45 for a the Hill kept them six points ahead. A young man who is making continuous great strides is Rian Early and he pointed for Kells in the 40th minute to keep them in the game.
Summerhill hit back but a Jonny Quigley point chalked that score off and when a point from Substitute Ryan Farnham and a Barry Farrelly free left just a goal between the sides as the game reached injury time. Another Hanlon free deep in the red was not enough as Summerhill closed out the two point win. There was plenty of positives to take from the day for Kells, with one of those being four 17 year olds, Taidgh Dardis, Oisin O’Reilly, Rian Early and Liam Barry taking to the field for the Gaeils tonight, with the first three starting the game for Gaeil Colmcille.
