Gaeil Colmcille and Simonstown got the Easter Weekend of Football Fixtures underway on a calm Holy Thursday evening. Goals from Danny Muldoon, Jonny Quigley and Daniel Farrelly maintained Kells winning start to the League campaign with two wins and a draw.
The home side Simonstown controlled the early parts of the match and struck the opening point with a long range effort in the 4th minute. Barry Farrelly dropped a free over the bar minutes before Muldoon got his and Kells opening goal when he gambled on a loose ball and punched to the back of the net.
Farrelly added a second pointed free in the 14th minute but Simonstown responded with a point of their own one minute later to see the Gaeils lead by Muldoon’s goal. Simonstown added another point but any sign of momentum for the Navan side was dashed when Jonny Quigley fired to the back of the net after good work from Daniel Farrelly.
Muldoon added a point and Brian Hanlon got in on the act with a point from an acute angle. There was still time for one more point with a good move out of defence by Barry Tormay, played Ajay Tormey through who laid the ball off to Muldoon and while a goal was on the cards, Muldoon chose to fist over the bar and see Kells lead 2-05 to 0-04 at the half time interval.
Like the first half, Simonstown controlled the early proceedings but it was the visitors who all but killed off the game when Daniel Farrelly seized on a shot from Aaron Browne that fell short and Farrelly was on hand to punch to the back of the net to push Kells 10 points clear.
The second half didn’t seem to live up to the first with scores at a minimum in the next 10 minutes. A Fionn Reilly point followed by a super point from Fionn Ferguson off his left foot either side of a Simonstown point kept a nice gap between the teams. This was but short in the 48th minute when Simonstown found the back of the net with a low shot. A Beano Hanlon free finished the scoring off in the match to see the two points go home with the Kells men with Donaghmore/Ashbourne awaiting in round 4.
