Gaeil Colmcille Seconds welcomed Carnaross to Grangegodden for the Round 6 fixture in Division 2B. The Kells side were coming off the back of three defeats in a row and were hoping to stop the rot on home soil.
Seven minutes would pass before the opening score of the game and it was the visitors who got it with a point from play. Fionn Ferguson who has been showing great form with the firsts picked off a mark a minute later to level things up. Carnaross regained the lead two minutes later and in a cagey affair there would be no more scores for seven minutes until Carnaross struck for two points in quick succession.
The Ross added a fifth point in the 22nd minute and Kells faced an uphill battle as the half drew to a close. Fionn Smith made a dashing run from full-back and got Kells second score of the game in the 25th minute. Fionn Ferguson followed that up with a third point for The Gaeils from the resulting kickout and one minute later Kells found themselves in front after Evan Sheridan disposed the Carnaross defender and his quick thinking put Ferguson through one on one, Ferguson opened his body up and hit a lovely strike with his left foot to the top corner of the net.
Things got better for Kells three minutes later when Evan Sheridan pounced on a loose ball in the Carnaross penalty area to drive to the back of the net to see Kells come from four down to lead by four as referee Peter Skelly blew for half-time.
Fionn Ferguson picked up where he left off in the first half and pointed for The Gaeils inside the opening 30 seconds of the half. Kells got some breathing room in the 32nd minute after another pulsating run from Fionn Smith ended up with the ball in Oisin O’Reilly’s hands and he sidestepped the goalkeeper to tap into an empty net. Kells stretched their lead to nine points in the 41st minute when Daniel Farrelly who was having a brilliant game got the point his performance deserved.
Carnaross got their 6th score shortly after but a Fionn Ferguson free kept Kells lead at nine points with a quarter of the game remaining. Evan Sheridan pointed in the 46th minute to leave Carnaross with a mountain to climb. The Ross hit the next two points in a row before Liam Barry showed great composure when he cut inside to his favoured left foot to point for Kells. Ferguson rounded the scoring off Kells to leave him with a personal tally of 1-05 on day out of The Gaeils 3-09. Carnaross did get a consolation score in the 56th minute in what was the last of the game. In a game where the scorers get the plaudits, special mention must go to the Gaeil Colmcille’s backs who put in a stellar performance to keep some of Carnaross sharpshooters at bay. The win for Gaeil Colmcille see them sit on four points level on points with Carnaross, Clann Na nGael and Ratoath.
