Gaeil Colmcille 2nds travelled to Longwood for their final round game in this years Division 2B after securing their safety in the previous round.
With both Gaeil Colmcille 1sts and 2nds playing at the same time, Kells called on a few favours from the third team to make sure The Gaeils fulfilled their fixture. Despite Longwood getting the opening point, three points in a row from Gaeil Colmcille gave them an early lead with 10 minutes on the clock, two points from Dylan Roche either side of a fisted effort from Sean Cleary.
Longwood got their second point of the evening but that was cancelled soon after by a late off the shoulder run from Cormac O’Reilly who clipped over Gaeil Colmcille’s fourth point. Longwood brought it back to the minimum but three more scores in a row saw Kells take a four point lead with the half drawing to a close. Kilian Kelly with a monster score, Gary McGovern with a free and Harry Flanagan with a peach off a score off his weaker left foot.
Two further points from Longwood and another free from McGovern left Kells 0-08 to 0-05 to the good at half time.
A game of two halves is a familiar cliche and it’s definitely one that could be used in this game as Longwood came bursting out of the traps and dominated the second half from start to finish.
Longwood hit 2-05 to no reply in a 15 minute onslaught that Kells had no answer for. Roche stopped the rot for Gaeil Colmcille but four more scores in a row saw them take a 12 point lead heading into the closing stages of the game. There was still time for two Gaeil Colmcille points with Gary McGovern getting his third free of the game and Caolán McConnell pointing also. Focus now turns to Championship in just over 5 weeks time for both these teams.
