Gaeil Colmcille Seniors picked up their first win in Grangegodden in nearly a year when they overcame Na Fianna with six points to spare.
In a game that was end to end with both sides missing some guilt edged goal opportunities, The Kells men proved more clinical with their points conversion with 18 scores to Na Fiannas 10 as the Baconstown/Enfield side kicked two 2 pointers along the way.
Gaeil Colmcille couldn’t have asked for a better start when they rushed into a 0-05 to 0-00 lead with Aaron Browne tapping over two points and points from Oisin Reilly, Oisin Walsh and Andrew Gormley made up the five scores.
Goal chances went a begging for Kells and this allowed Na Fianna back into the game with two points and a two pointer left the minimum between the sides with 16 minutes played. Gormley added a second point but that was cancelled out by Na Fianna’s fifth point of the game.
Kells closed out the half the stronger and outscored their opponents 0-03 to 0-01 with Jonny Quigley pointing along with frees from Seamus Mattimoe and Gormley to see Gaeil Colmcille lead 0-09 to 0-06 at the break.
The second half started off with one for the history books with Fionn Smith getting on the end of a darting run from corner back to point. Two points were traded with Kells point coming from Ajay Tormey after two initial block downs from the Na Fianna backs.
Kells stretched their lead to 6 points with Liam Devine getting on the act along with another for Gormley left it 0-13 to 0-07 with 3/4 of the game played.
Quigley and Reilly added scores for Kells but they were matched by two from the visitors and The Gaeils were hoping their goal chances wouldn’t come back to haunt them.
Credit to the home side they closed the game out with two more points for Gormley leaving his tally for the day on 0-06 while Mattimoe got his second of the game in between Gormleys scores to ensure the six point win.
