Gaeil Colmcille made it two wins on the bounce when a comprehensive victory over current Senior Champions Summerhill in Grangegodden.
Kells got off to the perfect start inside the opening three minutes when Andrew Gormley opted against the advanced mark and tore down on goal, Gormley made no mistake and found the back of the net. Summerhill responded with a point from the resulting kickout but Evan Sheridan restored Kells three point lead one minute later.
In a frantic opening 10 minutes, Summerhill scored their second point with Jonny Quigley adding Gaeil Colmcille’s second point. With 17 minutes played, Summerhill were level after three points in a row from The Hill. Brian ‘Beano’ Hanlon put Kells back in the lead followed by a Barry Farrelly free and an excellent score from Seamus Mattimoe.
Summerhill registered their sixth point of the day. Gaeil Colmcille closed out the half the better and an Andrew Gormley free was followed by a final score of the half from Mattimoe to see Kells lead by four at the break 1-07 to 0-06.
Gaeil Colmcille picked up from where they left off and Barry Farrelly hit a monster free from over 50 metres out. A Summerhill point was followed by another Farrelly free. Kells piled on the pressure and hit a purple patch with points from Brian Hanlon (2), Evan Sheridan, Seamus Mattimoe (2) and two from Andrew Gormley saw Kells push 13 points clear at 1-17 to 0-07.
Summerhill did stop the rot and if Kells thought it was to be their night it was sure to be when substitute Cormac Ferguson pointed (rumours of Cormac’s first point since Nobber in 2010). Both sides shared the final two scored with John Gormley rounding up the Kells scoring and the Kells win.
