Gaeil Colmcille welcomed St. Colmcille’s to Kells for the fifth round of the All County A League Division 1A. An epic battle throughout ended in the Saints nicking the win with the last kick of the game.

In a tight opening quarter, scores were hard to come by with just three points on the board with 15 minutes played as St. Colmcille led 0-02 to 0-01 with Brian Hanlon pointing for Kells from an early free kick.

Evan Sheridan playing at Centre Forward got the equalising score for Gaeil Colmcille in the 16th minute but that was to be the last score of the half for the Gaeils as the Saints finished the half the stronger tagging on the next three scores to leave it 0-05 to 0-02 at the break.

It could have been a lot worse for Kells but for the excellent saves from their keeper Justin Carry-Lynch, firstly saving from point blank and then Carry-Lynch saved low to his left to deny the Colmcille’s forward from the penalty spot.

Gaeil Colmcille got the opening score of the second half when Fionn Ferguson picked out Ajay Tormey with a perfect pass and Tormey shot reduced the lead to two points. That score got a response from St. Colmcille’s and two unanswered points saw them stretch their lead to four points with just 90 seconds played in the second half.

Gaeil Colmcille were being made to work hard for their scores and Oisin Reilly in the 33rd minute and Ryan Farnham in the 34th minute battled hard through the Colmcille’s traffic to score for Kells to cut the lead in half.

Both sides traded the next four scores with Hanlon pointing from a free and Reilly grabbing his second score of the game after Referee Cormac Reilly allowed the advantage of the score. Another Hanlon free in the 48th minute was followed Reilly’s third score of the game as the hard working midfielders runs from deep was causing problems for the visitors defenders.

Gaeil Colmcille could never get hold of the lead as from the resulting kick-out Colmcille’s regained the lead with five minutes remaining. Kells were awarded a free with two minutes remaining and up stepped second half substitute Barry Farrelly who made no mistake with his left foot to leave things all square.

With the game in injury-time it was the Seasiders who claimed the victory with the last kick of the game to bring all three points back to the Gold Coast of Meath. The loss for Gaeil Colmcille sees them sit second from bottom while St. Colmcille’s push up to second in the table with their win.
