Gaeil Colmcille and Moynalvey met in the third round of the Feis Cup with both sides sitting on four points with two wins from two games, something had to give in Grangegodden on a balmy Wednesday evening. An exhibition of point scoring from Seamus Mattimoe ensured it would be the Kells men who kept up their unbeaten run.
Within the opening minutes of the game it was clear the tactic Moynalvey were going to set up with as bodies covered their backline but in the second minute Mattimoe broke into space and got his and Gaeil Colmcille’s first point of the day. One minute later and a direct run from Martin Barrett forced the Moynalvey defence to bring him down and Mattimoe pointed over to double Gaeil Colmcille’s lead.
Moynalvey got their opening score in the fourth minute but two Mattimoe frees extended the Kells lead to three points. Both sides traded points before the first half water break with Oisin Reilly pointing for The Gaeils. Two more points from Mattimoe and Reilly were cancelled by two Moynalvey points. In the 26th minute Gaeil Colmcille got some breathing space when Fionn Ferguson’s left footed shot dropped short and was caught by Evan Sheridan, Sheridan turned on the end line and hand passed to the on rushing Mattimoe who palmed the ball to the back of the net.
The score of the half came in the 27th minute with Gaeil Colmcille patient build up and good work by Danny Muldoon and Phil Ward, the ball fell to centre back James Reilly broke the lines and pointed magnificently with his left foot. Ryan Farnham followed that score up and a Mattimoe free gave Gaeil Colmcille a 1-10 to 1-04 lead at half-time.
James Reilly started the second half like he ended the first as he broke out from defence to get his second point of the game and his fourth point in his last three games. From the 36th to the 49th minute Mattimoe started to pick off points at ease and hit the next five points for Gaeil Colmcille, his last score being his eleventh and final score of the day as he made way for his brother Cormac. Within that time Moynalvey registered three points of their own and kept their scoreboard ticking over.
In the 58th minute after good defensive work from Adam Donnelly and Ahmed Lawal the ball made its way forward and good work from Cormac Mattimoe who laid the ball off to Evan Sheridan who got a point that his evenings work deserved. The same was to be said for full-forward Fionn Ferguson whose runs were causing problems all game to the Moynalvey backs and he got his name on the scoreboard with a free in the 61st minute to see out the victory for Kells as they move on to play Summerhill away in round four.
