Gaeil Colmcille progressed to the Semi-Final of the Feis Cup with a five point victory over St. Colmcille’s at a windy Piltown on Friday evening.
Second half substitute Fionn Reilly accounted for 1-01 to ensure the victory with the goal coming in the 38th minute after great work by Rian Early who sent Reilly on his way and the Kells man made no mistake blasting to the roof of the net.
Kells made the brighter of the starts despite playing against a stiff breeze and took a 0-03 to 0-00 lead with five minutes played thanks to a brace from Seamus Mattimoe and a fine effort from Full-Forward Ryan Farnham. The Seasiders got their first score of the game in the sixth minute but a free from Ajay Tormey restored the three point lead for Gaeil Colmcille.
Both sides shared the next two scores with Jonny Quigley picking up where he left off last week and tagging on a point from Centre Back. St. Colmcille’s levelled things up in the 14th minute with a goal after some excellent direct football caught the Kells backs off guard and a finish from the corner forward that Barry Farrelly in the Kells goals could do nothing about. Mattimoe punched over the next score of the game but The Cille’s replied to draw the sides level once more with 16 minutes played.
Two scores from Tormey followed by an other Mattimoe point saw daylight between the sides with Gaeil Colmcille leading 0-09 to 1-03 with just seven minutes remaining in the half. The home side finished the half the stronger and two scores in a row left the minimum between the teams at half time with The Gaeils leading 0-09 to 1-05.
With the aid of a stiff breeze in their backs, Gaeil Colmcille and Aaron Browne used the conditions to their advantage as his shot from 45 yards out sailed across the bar for the opening score of the half inside just 60 seconds. A Barry Farrelly free sandwiched in-between two St. Colmcille’s scores kept the Gaeils ahead by one before the all important Fionn Reilly goal.
Reilly followed that goal with a trademark point, cutting in from the right hand side and slotting over the bar. Two further frees from Tormey in the 41st and 43rd minute and a superb point from Seanie Curran saw the largest lead of the game with Kells leading by seven points 1-15 to 1-08. That Curran point in the 46th minute turned out to be Kells final score of the game but with the Gaeils backs in top form The Cille’s could only manage two more points in the remainder of the game with the Kells side holding on to the five point win and advancing to the Semi-Finals.
