Gaeil Colmcille and Summerhill met in the Feis Cup in what was a repeat of the 2019 Final in which The Hill came out on top in a foggy afternoon in Ashbourne.
The weather this time around was the complete opposite with ideal conditions for a game of football. The hosts came flying out of the blocks and got off to a 0-04 to 0-00 with only four minutes on the clock. Gaeil Colmcille would have to wait until the 6th minute to register their opening score when corner back Ahmed Lawal found himself in an advanced position, just inside the Summerhill 45 and he pointed to get Kells off the mark.
Summerhill added two more points before a Seamus Mattimoe free as the referee called a halt for the first half with Summerhill 0-06 to 0-02 ahead. In a stop/start first half there was to be only one more score in the half with Summerhill hitting the back of the net after a well worked move where a direct ball was caught by Davy Larkin who ignored the referees whistle for the advanced mark and slotted beyond Justin Carry- Lynch in the Gaeil Colmcille goal to see The Hill take a 1-06 to 0-02 lead to the half-time break.
Gaeil Colmcille’s Conal Courtney got the opening score of the second half on 37 minutes but Summerhill’s Full-Forward Conor Frayne pointed to cancel out the Courtney point. Ryan Farnham got Gaeil Colmcille’s fourth point of the game, the point would be Gaeil Colmcille’s last of the game in the 39th minute.
Summerhill finished the game the stronger and a second goal in the 61st minute by Cian Devlin sealed the win for The Hill to give them the two points. On a positive note it was pleasing to see Liam Ferguson and Jonny Quigley return to the pitch and getting 60 minutes under their belt, Quigley returning after doing his cruciate the week of the County Final. Gaeil Colmcille will now look to regroup as a busy week of football approaches with two Premier Championship games over the weekend before they welcome Dunshaughlin to Grangegodden to round 5 of the Feis Cup.
