Gaelic Centre Memories… New Date
Gaelic Centre Memories… New Date

What are your memories of the venue that has been such a focal point in the life of Gaeil Colmcille and the greater Kells community for the past fifty or so years?

Is it . . . .

The dances back in the seventies featuring all the top showbands – long before Nathan Carter or Mike Denver had an a . . e in their trousers?

The Bingo Nights, Quiz Nights, Race Nights, or Bowls (that’s right!) games?

Birthday Parties from 18 to 80. First Communions & Confirmations. (The parties – not the ceremonies!)

The late night card games, where honesty and integrity was to the forefront. Occasionally! And never a row!

Pitch & Putt events on the long Summer evenings?

Visiting Pitch & Putt clubs, usually from Dublin, watered and fed by Mary Mac and her colleagues followed by a night of music and craic “overseen” by Victor & his Rapid Response Team!

The Christmas Draws – where Beulah would win twenty-one of the twenty prizes on offer!!

The “Back to The Centre” for minerals and crisps for victorious underage teams.

The Sunday night reviews/post mortems after club or county games. Many’s the game was “won” on the Sunday night . . . after the match!

The celebratory nights after championship success, or hosting the Meath All Ireland winning teams of the 80’s & 90’s, usually on the Friday night after the final.

The Birthday Tribute Nights for Fintan & Dessie, the main driving forces behind the building of the Gaelic Centre.  Both alas, now gone to their eternal reward.

And of course, the MEETINGS!!!  .. . . .Good Jesus!! . . ..  The MEETINGS!!!

So many fellows went into meetings as reasonably young, healthy, happy go lucky people – and came out just about ready for The Free Travel!!

And then, the “wimmin” started to attend meetings . . .. Let’s just leave that hang .. .!!

Whatever your memories, come and join us for an evening of celebration and nostalgia as we bid farewell to our iconic building!
