Amalgamated at underage, Kilskyre/Moylagh and Gaeil Colmcille locked battle in the Division 3 Hurling League at Ballinlough on Sunday afternoon.
Playing against the breeze Gaeil Colmcille got off to a great start with a point by Conal McGovern, and a goal from Evan Sheridan after a strong run through the centre by the midfielder. Kilskyre/Moylagh halved the deficit with one point from play and another from a free. Conor Roche and Stephen Reddy both converted frees either side of a point from play by the hosts. For the remainder of the half all 7 scores came from placed balls.
Three from distance by the Kilskyre/Moylagh goalkeeper drew the sides level with 20 minutes of the half gone. Roche and Reddy put the visitors ahead again but the keeper for the home side responded. Reddy got the final score just before referee Martin Dawson blew the halftime whistle to leave Gaeil Colmcille ahead on a score line of 1-06 to 0-07.
A similar scoring pattern with frees continued in the early stages of the second half as once again a point from the Kilskyre/Moylagh goalkeeper was met with replies first from Roche and then from Reddy. The Gaeils only score from play of the second half came from Barry Tormay after 9 minutes and two minutes later another Roche free stretched the lead to five points.
The momentum swung the home side’s way for the next 10 minutes but some excellent defending by Kells limited them to two points from play. These scores were cancelled out when two more frees were pointed by Roche to conclude the Kells scoring. The hosts got the final point of the game just as it entered injury time to reduce the gap to four at the finish.
