Both Gaeil Colmcille and Navan O’Mahonys came into todays game on the back of heavy defeats to Kildalkey and both were out to get their first points of the campaign.
It was very much a game of two halves in Athboy on Sunday morning as Kells lost out be the minimum to Navan O’Mahonys in the third round of the Intermediate Hurling Championship. The Gaeils led by 0-12 to 0-05 at half time, a score line that reflected their dominance at that stage. Eight different scorers contributed to their total, with nine of the points coming from play. The opening period also included an excellent save by Gary McGovern just before the half time whistle.
O’Mahonys started the second half with intent and pulled a point back after winning the throw in. McGovern made another excellent save, but relentless Navan pressure yielded two more points, and then a goal reduced the deficit to the minimum. A point from Liam Ferguson was brief respite as O’Mahonys added another three points to take the lead with less than 10 minutes to go. Kells pushed forward and Dylan Roche got on the end of a move to divert the ball goal-wards only to see his effort hit the underside of the crossbar. Navan responded by adding another point before Paul Tormey fired over what proved to be the final score of the game.
