Gaeil Colmcille welcomed Walterstown to Grangegodden for the final round of the LMFM Meath Minor Championship. With both teams looking for their first win of this years Championship after losses against St. Colmcille’s and Donaghmore Ashbourne.
An Andrew Butler point opened the scoring but three points from Walterstown saw “The Black’s” take a two point lead with ten minutes on the clock. Corner Forward Andrew Gormley got Kells second point of the game to leave the minimum between the sides at the first half water break.
Walterstown got this fourth point of the game soon after the restart but points from Gormley and Butler drew the sides level. Gormley added another point to see Gaeil Colmcille regain the lead, with 23 minutes on the clock Gaeil Colmcille got the first goal of the game, a shot dropped short from Gormley was fisted home by Sean Thornton to give Kells a four point lead.
With Kells on top The Gaeils got their second goal of the game four minutes later when Jack Hogg finished low to bottom corner to increase the Kells lead. Gormley once again split the posts with 30 minutes played to see Gaeil Colmcille stretch and take a 2-06 to 0-04 lead at half-time.
Andrew Gormley picked up where he left off in the first half when he got the first score of the half with a lovely point from 30 yards out.
Walterstown looked to have cut the deficit with a goal but an excellent save low down by goalkeeper Glen Gavagan kept Gaeil Colmcille with their commanding lead. 9 minutes into the second half and good work from Finn Mullan as he played Ajay Tormey through who slotted over the bar.
Two placed balled points from Walterstown kept the scoreboard ticking over but Butler killed any momentum when he pointed on 42 minutes. The score of the half came on 44 minutes just before the water break with an excellent team move finished off with the left boot of Mullan.
A further two points from Walterstown kept the hosts honest but Jack Hoggs second goal and Gaeil Colmcille’s third on 55 minutes looked to have guaranteed the two points for Kells, the goal coming after a 45 by Tormey fell short and Hogg rose highest to fist to back of the net.
Tormey added a second point to his tally with the aid of the upright helping the ball over the bar, this was followed by another Andrew Butler point. In the final moments of the match good work from Liam Barry resulted in a free being given and Tormey tapped over to give in Kells the 13 point victory. A fitting end to the group for a bunch of lads that have put in so much effort in throughout the year.
