Gaeil Colmcille and Wolfe Tones met for the fourth year running in the Meath Senior Football Championship with the D’Tones holding the bragging rights of two wins and a draw over their Kells counterparts.

With the a strong breeze into the town end of Pairc Tailteann it was Wolfe Tones who had the aid in the opening half. Kells were denied the perfect start after Seamus Mattimoe found himself one on one with stand in Tones keeper Cian Ward but Mattimoe’s effort was kept out and the game remained scoreless,

Wolfe Tones took a grip of the game with three points in a row and Gaeil Colmcille struggled with the wind as the dropped shots short and missed frees with the toughness of the breeze. Credit must be given to the Kells backs who, time after time overturned The Tones forwards and that effort paid off down the far end as a free by Barry Farrelly was tipped over on 16 minutes. Andrew Gormley pointed a free 9 minutes later while Farrelly levelled the game up before half time with his second free of the game to leave the sides 0-03 each at half-time.

Gaeil Colmcille took the lead for the first time in the match when Gormley added his second free of the game but that was soon cancelled by a Wolfe Tones point three minutes later. Ryan Farnham restored Kells lead in the 40th minute with The Gaeils first point from play in the game to lead 0-05 to 0-04.

Like the first half, Wolfe Tones rallied off three points in a row thanks to a 45 and two points from play to open up a two point lead with just over 10 minutes remaining. Gormley got his third point of the game and his first from play to reduce the lead to the minimum which set up a nervy finish.

Just as Kells got close the experience of Wolfe Tones showed as they tapped over a a free two once again open up a two point lead. Kells substitute Evan Sheridan kept his side in the game with a monster point from 40 yards out and as The Gaeils went in search of an equalising score, it was D’Tones who got the insurance score in the 62nd minute. Gaeil Colmcille were given one last chance of a snatch and grab goal but Farrelly saw his free blaze over the bar as referee Patrick Coyle blew for full-time.
