Gaeil Colmcille made the trip to Fr. Tully Park to face Seneschalstown in the LMFM Division 1 Spring Football League. The Gaeils earned their right to Division 1 after victory over Dunboyne in the Division 2 Final in 2019.
It was the Kells lads that got off to the perfect start when Corner-Forward Alex Williams drove over the bar for the opening score, although there was a half-chance of hitting the net. Gaeil Colmcille increased their lead to 0-03 to no score when Fionn Smith burst from midfield and slotted over and William’s grabbed his second point.
Seneschalstown got their opening score on 10 minutes but a Cian Donlon point one minute later restored Gaeil Colmcille’s three-point lead. By the 18th minute, Seneschalstown had drawn level after notching three points in a row.
Two minutes later and Seneschalstown had the lead for the first time but for a Jamie Jordan point to get Kells back level heading into the final 10 minutes of the half. Kells would go on to finish the half the strongest and outscored the home side 1-02 to 0-01 with William’s bagging all for Kells. The goal coming from a well-worked move which started with goalkeeper Sean Thornton and traveled the full length of the pitch and ended with William’s firing low to the back of the net to see Gaeil Colmcille go in 1-07 to 0-06 at the break.
Seneschalstown struck first in the second half with a point to cut the gap to three but again Kells corner-forward William’s struck another 1-02 to stretch The Gaeils lead to 8 points with 37 minutes played. Donlon got his second point of the game on 41 minutes after good work from midfielder Cormac O’Reilly and wing forward Luke Ronan.
The final 20 minutes were tight and only for good work from the Kells full-back line of Kristapus Vithauskas, Darragh Smyth and Phelim Dunne kept the Seneschalstown forwards at bay.
Senechalstown got to within six points but a point from wing-back Ajay Tormey secured a seven-point victory and cap an all-round brilliant performance from the team. Next up for Gaeil Colmcille is a trip to u16 Division 1 Champions Dunshaughlin who recorded a five-point victory Ratoath in Round 1.
