St. Colmcille’s made the trip to Grangegodden from the east coast and left with the two points on offer in the opening fixture of the LMFM Minor Football League Division 1 with two first half goals proving crucial in the end.
In a tight opening 15 minutes it was Kells who racked up the first three points of the evening two coming from the boot of Liam Barry either side of an Oisin O’Reilly point. The three scores woke St. Colmcilles and their response was excellent as they hot three unanswered points followed by a goal on thirteen minutes to see “The Cille’s” lead by 1-03 to 0-03.
Credit to “The Gaeils” their response too was excellent as full-forward Oisin Walsh was causing all problems for the St. Colmcille’s full-back and three points in a row for Walsh and Kells saw them level once more with 20 minutes played. St. Colmcille’s finished the half the stronger and the second of their goals came just before half time after their fourth point to see them take a 2-04 to 0-06 lead in at half-time.
Two free’s early from Walsh cut the gap to two points but St. Colmcille’s pulled one back in the 35th min to restore a three point lead. Walsh added another free on 41 minutes and there would be no score for another 10 minutes as second half substitute Conall McGovern scored excellently to leave the minimum between the sides. Just like the first half, it was St. Colmcille’s who finished the stronger and three points in a row stretched the lead to four points and with both sides sharing the last two scores with Walsh getting his seventh point of the day, Kells would have to settle for being second best.
