Gaeil Colmcille Seconds travelled to Piltown to take on St. Colmcille’s in the first round of the Premier Championship in a wind swept.
Gary McGovern got things underway with a free kick for the Gaeils in the second minute of the game but the home side clicked into gear and hit four unanswered points to see them lead 0-04 to 0-01 with 11 minutes played.
The Gaeil Colmcille backs were immense throughout the game but in particular the first half playing against a stiff breeze. One of those backs, Daniel Farrelly got Kells second point of the game and a second McGovern free left the minimum between the sides. McGovern struck the equalising score in the 26th minute with The Gaeils responding brilliantly to St. Colmcille’s quick start.
One minute later and another of the high performing Gaeil Colmcille backs got on the score sheet after great interlinking play, Danny Muldoon found himself in-front of the Cille’s goals and his effort blazed across the bar for Kells to lead by one. St. Colmcille’s levelled things up just on the half time whistle to leave the sides level on five points each.
The Seasiders started the more smartly in the second half and struck the first three points of the half. While Gaeil Colmcille started to rue their missed chances when St. Colmcille’s got the games opening goal thanks to a fisted effort from the Cille’s full forward.
Kells reacted to the goal and hit the back of the net 60 seconds later when Muldoon made another lung bursting run and this time he composed himself to finish to the bottom left hand corner. Unfortunately for the Gaeils that’s all they could muster in the second half as they went in search for a second goal, St. Colmcille’s broke away and got theirs to kill off the game and seal the win.
