Both sides came into this fixture on the back of good wins in round two with the hosts Wolfe Tones overcoming Dunboyne while Gaeil Colmcille were victors over Dunshaughlin.
Gaeil Colmcille got the opening two scores of the game, the first from Phil Ward in midfield in the opening minute of the game while Ryan Farnham, playing at Full-Forward tagged on the second six minutes later. In the blink of an eye the Tones were level, with two points in as many minutes, one from play and a free. Wolfe Tones looked certain for a goal when their centre-back was left one on one with the Gaeil Colmcille goalkeeper Stephen Reddy but Reddy was equal to the task and produced a wonderful save.
In the 14th minute just before the water-break, Gaeil Colmcille struck for the games first goal, Barry Smith gathered the ball out near the sideline and his shot was held up by a strong wind and dropped dangerously in the Tones square and Alex Williams rose highest to palm to the back of the net.
The Tones got the first score after the Water-Break with a free on 19 minutes. Gaeil Colmcille rattled off the next three scores, the first from a Barry Farrelly free, followed by an excellent point by Cian Doogan. Phil Ward got his second of the game and Gaeil Colmcille led by five points with 28 minutes played. Wolfe Tones did close out the half the stronger and hit two points without reply to see them trail 0-05 to 1-05 at the break.
The Tones came out for the second half with a sense of urgency and got the first point of the half to bring just two points between the teams. With 37 minutes on the clock, Ryan Farnham scored an outstanding goal, Farnham picked the ball up on his own 45 yard line and tore through the Tones defence and fired to the back of the net to see Kells push five clear.
Both sides shared the next four scores with Farnham and Doogan pointing for Kells, his second of the game. Phil Ward got his third point of the game with the Gaeil Colmcille midfield partnership accounting for 0-05 of the Gaeils scores. Substitute Tony Smyth scored his first Championship point for Gaeil Colmcille when he fired over with the right foot.
With time running out for the Tones, two Farnham points either side of a Wolfe Tones point saw Gaeil Colmcille close out the game and an eight point victory. The win see’s the Gaeils move up to third place behind Trim and Seneschalstown.
