As Gaeil Colmcille set off on their little road trip with McNamee’s Coach Hire, there was a Premier Championship Division 7 match versus St. Vincent’s to get taken care of first.
Things didn’t go according to plan early on as three lovely new O’Neills footballs got caught high up in the ball stop nets, much to the disgust of MANAGER Benny Reddy who takes pride in the replenishment of the footballs.
Finally the game got started and playing thirteen a-side it was the home side who got off to the best of starts scoring the opening two points of the game. Three minutes in and St. Vincent’s and everyone in attendance at Masterson Park was in Shock when Gary McGovern passed the ball from a scoreable free kick, the pass was the right option which put Cormac Mattimoe through to blast the ball to the back of the net.
McGovern then got paid back for his kindness as he was set up for two points in a row to see Kells take a 1-02 to 0-02 lead with 8 minutes played. Both sides traded the next four scores with Mattimoe tagging on two lovely scores, Vincent’s struggling to keep with the pace of the speedster.
Two points either side of a Gary McGovern point was soon followed by the second goal of the game, this time Shane Bennett arriving on time to shoot to the back of the net. McGovern cancelled out a Vincent’s score and it was the visitors who took a 2-06 to 0-07 lead at the break.
At half-time, the deal was done with the St. Vincent’s Executive that they’d replace our balls and they’d get “some lad witta Cherry Picka” to come down and get them during the week. They were happy, Benny was happy and the ref was happy to start the second half.
Almost directly from the throw up, Half-Time substitute Alex Williams who loves a goal followed his Hat-Trick in round 2 with Kells third goal of the game. St. Vincent’s responded well and three points in a row chalked Williams goal off and five points once again was the gap between the sides.
Conal Gormley grabbed what I think could be his first score of the club on 38 minutes and McGovern followed that with a score of his own and with that score he let out an enormous belt of a shout to rally the troops to finish the job. If anything the only one McGovern rallied was himself as he turned on the style in the remaining 12 minutes scoring the final three points of the game for The Gaeils.
St. Vincent’s did have an opportunity to pull a goal back as the referee awarded a penalty but Gaeil Colmcille’s Chris Doyle was equal to the effort and as he dived low to his right kept The Vincent’s at bay and his clean sheet intact.
The win for Kells leaves them sitting on top of Division 7 with 4 wins out of 4.
A special mention must go to unused substitute Barry Farrelly who put on a show in darts in Bennett’s Bar after the game as he treated the crowd to an exhibition at no charge.
