Gaeil Colmcille and Trims third teams locked battle once again in Páirc Colmcille on Tuesday evening in Division 5 of the Premier Cup.
Conditions weren’t ideal for football and after Trim opened the scoring in the fourth minute the next score wouldn’t arrive until the 14th minute when Sean Cleary popped up in space to level things up. Kells had a great opportunity for a goal prior to the equaliser but Fionn Smith saw his shot saved.
A Brian Byrne 45 in the 15th minute put Gaeil Colmcille two points to one ahead but that was soon chalked off when Trim pointed a minute later. Trim were then awarded a penalty in the 20th minute and Sean Thornton guessed the wrong way to see Trim push a goal clear.
Gaeil Colmcille did rally for the final 10 minutes of the half and points from Smith and a wonderful individual score from Gary McGovern on the stroke of half-time left the minimum between the sides with the visitors leading 1-02 to 0-04.
Gaeil Colmcille got the perfect start to the second half when McGovern picked up where he left off and pointed straight away in the second half. Kells then struck for their first goal of the game when Alex Williams gambled on a loose ball, flicked the ball away from the Trim defender and soccer style finished off to the back of the net.
Credit to Trim their response was emphatic and four scores in a row in a 8 minute spell saw them take the lead once more. As the with the flow of the game it was Gaeil Colmcille’s time to respond as two points from Caolan McConnell and a free from McGovern put The Gaeils back in front. Trim once again drew level with 10 minutes remaining but this is when Substitute Gary Arkins came to the fore and Arkins struck Gaeil Colmcille’s final 2-01 of the game to seal a four point win and leave the Kells men unbeaten in the Division 5 Cup.
