Gaeil Colmcille made it two wins from two in the Coolrite U19 Championship with a six point victory away to Rathkenny.

Rathkenny outscored Gaeil Colmcille two points to one in the opening five minutes but when Tiernan Anderson equalised in the 6th minute the Kells side never looked back. Soon after, Kells were ahead by three when the hard working Shane Callaghan finished low beyond the Rathkenny keeper to get the games opening goal.

Now in the ascendancy, Gaeil Colmcille were finding their range with Andrew Gormley pointing a free and Oisin O’Reilly with a monster score in the 14th minute. The lead was out to six when Liam Barry pointed a free and Kells purple patch was complete when Oisin Walsh pointed from play in the 26th minute.

A penalty miss by Andrew Gormley sprung a bit of life into Rathkenny and they struck two points in quick succession but Walsh hit another beauty just on the stroke of half time to leave the away side 1-07 to 0-04 up at the break.

Rathkenny came firing out of the blocks in the second half and hit the first two scores of the half and only for some wayward shooting there could’ve been more for the hosts. If Rathkenny thought they were getting back into the game, they were hit by a sucker punch in the 44th minute after a well worked move by Kells ended in Walsh smashing the ball to the back of the net.

The wides and balls dropped short were stacking up for Rathkenny but they were handed a lifeline with 10 minutes to go when Referee Eamon Barry spread his arms to signal for a penalty. Up stepped the Rathkenny forward to take, but like Gormley in the first half, he failed to got the target.

That miss sucked the life out of Rathkenny and as Kells closed out the game, the brilliant Rian Early at full back found his way up the pitch and point Gaeil Colmcille’s final score.
